2010 UOO Community Dinner – 4th Annual event

Before you knew it, the big event was finally here, the 4th annual UOO Community Dinner! After a lot of planning and a huge list of wonderful volunteers, the Community Center of Berthoud was transformed. This event showcases authentic Ukrainian food and most of it was handmade by one of our Ukrainian chaperones. Even our campers got to prepare and serve their pot of Borscht as a way of serving those who serve them. This event paves the way for next year’s camp and these campers are reminded that this is a way for them to “pay it forward”.

Everything went off without a hitch despite the fact that I was concerned about the attendance and food count. I remember Kris Stoesz telling me to not worry, that it was in God’s hands and he would provide the people…and extra food if we needed it. She was right, He provided! There were plenty of people and the extra food that appeared from nowhere was like the story of the multiplying loaves and fishes! I think we counted over 150 people and we had enough cake to feed Berthoud! Not too shabby, crabby! Even though the dinner was free, we brought in a nice sized donation from the money box and envelopes on the tables! Thank you everyone for reaching deep in your pockets, in this economy, and providing “for the least of these”.

Many thanks to our musical entertainment, The Luke Ham Sandwich Family Band (www.lukehamsandwich.com). If you’ve never heard these guys, you’re missing a real treat. A few kids, along with their Dad & Mom put on a great singing concert with acoustical guitar, fiddle, mandolin and upright bass. Since they have three international adoptees in their family, their entertainment style and our mission is closely intertwined. Their family has a heart for orphans and we are extremely proud to have them every year! I think little Valera was their biggest fan. He watched intensely as these kids played their instruments and sang. I’m sure he came away from the experience with a profound sense that, he too, could do the same. Therein lies the mission of UOO, to expose orphans to the outside world, giving them hope and purpose for their lives!
